The Rose of Jericho – the Rose of the Virgin Mary – the immortal Rose of the Resurrection
The legend has it that it accompanied the Virgin on her lonely journey from Jerusalem to Egypt and out of respect for her grace it opened next to her at every stop and closed again to follow her steps in the desert every time she continued on her way . The Virgin Mary saw it, was saddened, shed tears of emotion and opened the rose with her tears. She blessed it never to die.
Another equally beautiful myth says that when Christ went from the desert to the city of Jericho, tired and thirsty, as he was seeing the walls of Jericho from afar he sat down on a rock to rest. The hot desert air blew past a dry plant at his feet. The plant, dry as it was, as soon as it touched his feet turned green, opened, and on its leaves a few drops of dew came out. The myth wants Christ to take these dewdrops in his hands and wet his lips, dry from the heat, giving his blessing to this plant for the few moments of coolness it gave him. Since then Bedouins and many people have been searching to find the rose of Jericho for its multiple metaphysical properties.
For many years now, it has accompanied people’s desires and dreams, having a place in the traditions of various cultures.
It symbolizes resurrection, rebirth, enduring love and longevity in different religions.
In England, the groom-to-be would open the rose of Jericho to get the desired answer from his girlfriend and put the ring inside to close it. Then he would give the rose to the girl and she would open it and take the ring.
In Germany they give it to new couples to have a child soon. They opened it again on the day they learned the happy news as a symbol of good luck and happiness. This rose was offered to the child and accompanied him in every important period of his life and his decisions.
In Egypt they opened it to protect against any evil that would enter the house.
In Mexico it was even used in a burial custom by placing the rose on the monument of the dead so that the soul may rest in peace. From there it probably got the name ‘rose of the resurrection’.
The women of Smyrna opened it on Friday or at the full moon for the enjoyment of life and as a symbol of abundance and love.
Placed under the bed of a sick person, it is said that it can help with healing.
One of the ways it can be used: We make a wish and place it in a bowl. We put a little water on it (enough to cover its roots). Little by little and soon, what before looked like a dry root will open up and turn green. That is, it will bloom. We change the water daily for three weeks (21 days), and on the 22nd we take it out of the water and let it close. We pour the water we change on plants we keep at home and do not pour it down the sink. The Rose will be closed again and will be as it was originally. We can repeat the same process as many times as we want. But it is good to give the rose about 2 weeks to rest before we wake it up again.
A little attention is only needed to not forget to change the water daily and not to put too much of it because there is a risk that it will rot if we do not take care of it as we should.
And it can stay with us and accompany us for many, many years.
Please note that each Rose is unique so may vary slightly from the pictures shown.
